Dressing Professionally (on a budget)

6 Feb

In the professional world dressing the part determines your credibility. The way you dress influences the way you feel, think and act. When you’re dressed professionally, you speak and act with confidence.

It’s easy to get a professional look without bursting your budget.

1. Figure your needs and wants. Examine your closet. Scan for any items that you could pair together to achieve a professional look. For example, a simple cardigan with a cocktail dress. Work with what you already have.

2. Invest in a classic black suit (jacket, pants and skirt). It’s a purchase that will go a long way since it can be mixed and matched with anything, and can take your from an important meeting, to happy hour after a long day at work. Invest in a quality color fast fabric. Adding a white, crisp cotton, long-sleeved, shirt with a collar and a silk long sleeve will leave you with lots of options. Five items, eight outfits.

Adding different ties to a basic black suit will create a whole new look. Consider alternating with contrasting colours. If you wear a blue tie one day, wear a dark red the next day.

3. It’s essential to purchase a comfortable pair of shoes. Splurge on your comfort. Match your shoes to your outfits. Black shoes generally go with everything .

4. Keep the accessories and jewelry to a minimum. Pearl accessories are a must for the ladies. Pearls always add a touch of class. Nude stockings should be worn with skirt and pants. I think that all ladies should carry a handbags big enough to carry daily essentials.

Men should match socks with shoes. Keep it simple. Design should be at a minimum (preferably none). Cufflinks and tie pins create a finishing touch.

5. Add other pieces which could easily mix and match with your existing outfits. Accessorizing with a belt will spice up any outfit.

6. Wait for deals. Shop for business suits at the end of the season.

If you follow these tips you’ll realize how easy it is to dress professionally for less.

Charlene, great tips here for men. I want to point out that the basics for men is a navy suit. It can be matched with any shirt and almost any tie.
